Tithi तिथि

A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun — anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours. Thirty tithis make a lunar month: 15 in Shukla paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna paksha (waning). The tithi prevailing at sunrise (udaya tithi) names the day.

Kshaya & Vriddhi tithi

When a tithi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, it never touches sunrise and is called kshaya (skipped). When one tithi spans two sunrises it is vriddhi (repeated). This is why some months have 29 or 31 tithi-days on the calendar.
