Rajasthan ka calendar kaise chalta hai?
Rajasthan follows the Vikram Samvat, a luni-solar calendar that is 57 years ahead of the Gregorian year. The new samvat begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (20 March 2026) — the same day Gangaur worship gathers pace.
Months here are Purnimanta: each month ends on the full moon (Purnima). So the dark fortnight before Holi is still Phalgun, and Janmashtami falls in Bhadrapad Krishna Ashtami. Gujarat and Maharashtra use Amanta months — which is why the same festival can carry a different month name next door.
About every three years an extra month — Adhik Maas (Purushottam Maas) — is added so festivals stay in their seasons. 2026 has an Adhik Jyeshtha, which is why Teej and Raksha Bandhan arrive later than usual.

Panchang kaise padhein? · How to read it
- Find the Maas
Look at the Hindu month — e.g. Bhadrapad. In Rajasthan the month ends on Purnima.
- Check the Paksha
Shukla (waxing) is the bright half, Krishna (waning) the dark half.
- Read the Tithi
The tithi at sunrise names the whole day for vrat and festival purposes.
- See Nakshatra & Yoga
Used for muhurat — Pushya, Rohini and Revati nakshatras are considered very auspicious.
- Note Sunrise–Sunset
Vrat parana and puja timings depend on local sunrise; Jaisalmer is ~20 min behind Jaipur.

Jaipur was founded by Sawai Jai Singh II — an astronomer-king who built five Jantar Mantar observatories.
The Samrat Yantra at Jaipur's Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO site, tells local time to about two seconds.
The Vikram Samvat counts from the era of King Vikramaditya — hence it runs 57 years ahead of AD.
Rajasthan was formed in seven stages between 1948 and 1956 by uniting 19 princely states.
Greater Rajasthan was inaugurated on 30 March 1949 — today celebrated as Rajasthan Diwas.
Gangaur puja runs from the day after Holi for 16–18 days, with girls carrying ghudlia pots at night.
